The Color Before the Sun

The first song on this beautiful album is "Island". This song is about the mental and physical state of being trapped in a location and just wanting freedom. The chorus of this song is "Now give me one good reason to stay here at all, when the fee is too big, our apartment's too small. Where is my life saver when I'm screaming danger?" When writing this song Claudio was stuck living in a small New York apartment that he was unhappy with. He is very shy and needed a space where he could work on his music until he was ready for people to hear it. The mental entrapment comes from how the world will perceive his art and his every move. If he does one thing out of step, how will the world react? Personally I have felt this way on multiple occasions; it feels as if I could never make everyone happy. It may feel like this, but usually it never is.

The second song is "Eraser". This song is about wanting to go back in your life before events in your life happened. Sometimes it can be a past relationship or something you said that you want to take back. I get this feeling from the line "Turn the clocks back, to the way things were, I never wanted to be this me." I think it really expresses the way we feel at times. The third song is "Colors". The chorus of the song is "when the world comes crashing down, don't make a move don't make a sound. Just watch it fall, watch it come down. Feel it as it goes, does it feel good to let it go." I think that this song is talking about just letting go of all the drama or problems that sometimes invade our lives. The way we try to keep everyone happy, but lose ourselves along the way.

The last song I want to talk about is "Peace to the Mountain". At first glance at the title or listen you might think this song is about death, but it is not. This song is about rebirth, finding your new self. I find this song so rejuvenating. Saying goodbye to everything and making your new self the best you can be for yourself and in turn for everybody else. The chorus of this song is "peace to the mountain, girl I'm gonna go go." So in a way it is a closing of a chapter, but it is a happy ending. The way that the strings and trumpet come in near the end of this song is glorious beyond words. This song really shows the love that Coheed fans feel for each other in concert and I highly recommend seeing this album in concert.
